music – tech – science – webcraft

Dennis Ritchie is the creator of the C programming language, who recently passed away. It’s amazing to think that there may not have been a Steve Jobs if C was never created. They both are great minds and will both be missed. Here’s a poignant post from a great site, www.hackthissite.org:

It’s been a hell of a week for the technology world, having now lost two of its greatest minds. Far fewer of the world know of Dennis Ritchie, but for those who know a thing or two about the Unix and C world, you know that truly every single fathomable element of computing in every conceivable form is in some part thanks to Dennis Ritchie and his team of engineers.

Dennis Ritchie is the creator of the C programming language, and a key developer in the Unix operating system. Without his fundamental and incomprehensibly important contributions, it is guaranteed that absolutely nothing of what we currently know and love about everything technological would exist. Without C and Unix, none of this, not a single bit, would be possible.

For what the world owes Steve Jobs in his contributions to modern-day gadget and general computing, the world owes Dennis Ritchie orders of magnitudes more.

HackThisSite is a very large user of the Unix operating system FreeBSD, and for that sheer simple fact alone, we owe Dennis Ritchie our most sincere and utmost gratitude and respect.

On behalf of Dennis Ritchie:

printf(“Goodbye, World!\n”);
exit(0);

MomentMemory

I’ve been working hard over the years learning different programming languages, and playing with new web technologies. Recently I decided to create another “learner” app in an effort to learn more about Ruby on Rails, HTML5 and CSS3. I think it came out pretty decent for the amount of time I was able to spend on it. I used bits and pieces from README docs for Devise, CSS3buttons, Simple Form as well as from a few blogs which I can’t remember off the top of my head.

Basically the application is a place to store “memories” in a private way. Think Facebook updates but not viewable to the whole world–it’s basically a micro-diary. Personally, I have a pretty terrible memory when it comes to dates and even events (must be that my brain is full of really important stuff like how ActiveRecord works).

Currently, Moment Memory is really basic, allowing you to create edit and destroy entries. Some future enhancements I plan on implementing are: photo uploads, sharing to social networks, design upgrades like ajax implentation and layout tweaks, along with plenty of others.

Feel free to create an account and play around and let me know what you think! Just so you know, it’s not 100% bug free at this point so don’t be surprised if something doesn’t work exactly as planned!

SwapBeats

For the past 3 months I’ve been lucky to work with some amazing people at a local start-up business called SwapBeats. It’s an online tool built with musicians and producers in mind that allows collaboration and networking to happen regardless of geographic location. Musicians can network, share music, sell music, create projects with other individuals, among many other things! Check out this article for a deeper look inside SwapBeats: http://www.startribune.com/business/122702409.html

Currently we’re still in private beta and are looking for some help! We need to get some users on our site before we launch our public beta in June (this is when we open up the site to the public). Even if you’re not a musician you can still register, create a profile (if you want), become part of our community, and give us valuable feedback. Even better, if you could forward or pass on this code to your contacts, especially those with an affinity towards music, that would help us out a lot! I’m hoping to find 50 people who will sign up with this code.

So, please go to http://swapbeats.com, click “Register”, enter the code below, and tell your contacts to do the same!

I hope to see you at SwapBeats and thanks for you help– it’s much appreciated. :)

Everyone knows that when you’re on an open network, say School or Public Wifi, your data isn’t guarded from everyone else connected to the network at the same time. If you login to Facebook, information is sent openly through the air and almost anyone can “sniff” the network to see what people are up to, or take over your session entirely. Read more…

I just came across an amazing site showing many different experiements the author has worked on, most having to do with HTML5. Check them out here: www.mrdoob.com. If you haven’t had much of a chance to dive into the possibilities, here you can see some pretty cool examples. I was particularly impressed with Harmony, a drawing application and Voxels, an application that allows you to draw points in 3 dimensional space. I would recommend setting aside at least 30 minutes to play with all of these awesome pieces! Another cool part is that some of his source code is available on GitHub for use for your own experimentation.

This is an awesome info-graphic from www.flowtown.com talking about where the internet (and all its data) might be in 10 years.

Upon being accepted into the Intro to Ruby/Rails class offered by P2Pu, as mentioned in an earlier post, we’ve been tasked with some good tutorials to make sure we’re up to speed when working in this particular environment. I just finished the tutorial offered at git-immersion.com and must say, it was super helpful. Read more…
